A game-changer in breast cancer detection

By Abigail Klein Leichman
July 26, 2011

Israeli device now in clinical trials avoids radiation, guesswork, discomfort and other downsides that make mammography an imperfect screening tool.

Real Imaging RUTH
RUTH screens for breast cancer without touching the patient.

Early detection is the key to improving breast cancer survival rates, but mammography is not the ideal method to accomplish this goal. On this point, medical experts across the globe agree.

Not as clear is what could do the job without the disadvantages of mammography -- which often causes pain or discomfort; emits radiation; cannot properly image dense breast tissue; relies on a radiologist's interpretation of the image; and is not recommended for routine screening of women under age 40 or 50.

Of several approaches being developed worldwide, an Israeli solution pioneered by electro-optical engineer Boaz Arnon holds particular promise in providing a game-changing device for early detection of breast cancer.

Arnon's mother, Ruth, succumbed to the disease in 2004. Through Real Imaging, the company he founded in 2006, he was determined to offer an accurate alternative that would address all issues of concern and still be cost-effective.

Appropriately named RUTH, the device he invented uses a new trademarked platform he calls MIRA (functional Multidimensional Infra-Red Analysis). Built on principles from existing technologies and mathematics, MIRA enables functional quantitative analysis of 3D and infrared signals emitted from cancerous and benign breast tissue.

"Our solution is not sensitive to age or breast density, and works without radiation," Arnon tells ISRAEL21c. "We image the patient from a distance of 70 centimeters (25.5 inches), with no physical contact or radiation, and we have developed an automatic method that aims to detect breast cancer early, easily and as cheaply as possible."

No more guesswork

"Physicians should be highly praised for their success rate in diagnosing breast cancer with the tools available today," says Arnon, "but still, the death rate from breast cancer is unacceptable."

Breast cancer is by far the most frequent cancer among women, with an estimated 1.38 million new cancer cases diagnosed in 2008 (accounting for 23 percent of all cancers), and is now the most common cancer both in developed and developing regions.

Though a medical doctor will oversee screenings with RUTH, "automatic" is one of its most key features. Results will not have to be interpreted by human eyes, thanks to the device's unique process of calibration using mathematical algorithms formulated from three-dimensional models of hundreds of women with and without malignancies. The algorithms provide unprecedented accuracy, as Real Imaging has demonstrated in blind studies.

"Our sensitivity results show 90 percent accuracy for women of all ages," says Arnon. By comparison, mammography usually is about 80 percent accurate, and not even that high in younger patients.

"This is not guesswork; it is science. We have proof we can explain clinically that our method is working," he says.

More than 2,000 women have been involved in clinical trials for RUTH since 2007 at six Israeli hospitals - Hadassah-Ein Kerem in Jerusalem, Sheba Medical Center at Tel Hashomer, Beilinson Hospital and Assuta Medical Center in Tel Aviv, Meir Medical Center in Kfar Saba and Kaplan Medical Center in Rehovot. The entire procedure takes only a few minutes.

"We now have the fifth generation of the RUTH device," says Arnon. "Before the end of this year, we will probably have one [being tested] in Europe as well."

On sale as soon as 2012

The company aims to achieve CE approval this year, certifying that its product has met the health, safety and environmental requirements of the European Union, and will submit the product for approval from the US Food and Drug Administration the following year.

"We hope to start sales next year," says Arnon, whose previous major successful invention was a Lumio virtual keyboard that can be projected on a surface.

He expects RUTH to cost less than mammography equipment but to be used, initially, as an adjunct to that existing methodology.

The device is manufactured in Israel and the company of 30 employees is based in Airport City near Tel Aviv. Arnon reveals that the proprietary technology might have other useful applications, "but right now we're concentrating on this one. If we succeed in this area, we will have achieved our goal." •

Obamageddon update

Let me see if I have this straight.

Barack Obama is threatening to do the following if Republicans don’t approve raising the record debt limit, allowing him to spend trillions more on the backs of Americans not yet born:
Why?

He’ll do this not because there isn’t money to make all of these payments in the treasury, but because he wants to blackmail and bully Republicans and ordinary Americans who have made themselves dependent on government and to keep borrowing so he can do all of the following:
In other words, Obama threatens to use his power in a premeditated way to harm the country if he doesn’t get his way. •

TYSON FOODS ELIMINATES LABOR DAY IN FAVOR OF MUSLIM HOLIDAY
Tyson Food in Shelbyville , Tennessee has eliminated Labor Day as a paid holiday in favor of the last day of Ramadan because they have 700 Muslim employees. The fact that they have almost that many non-Muslim employees is beside the point apparently!
I will no longer purchase any Tyson products. It's just one more little chunk of America that's been bitten off. If you wish to join me, then let your e-mail friends know this. TODAY'S NEWS:

CNN Breaking News:
07/17/2011

Ousted Egyptian strongman Hosni Mubarak has regained consciousness after falling into a coma Sunday, a top hospital official said.

The 83-year-old ex-ruler fell into a coma around noon (6 a.m. ET), Mubarak lawyer Farid El Deeb told CNN. Hospital officials initially denied the report to Egypt's state-run Nile TV, but Mohamed Fathalla, the head of the Sharm el-Sheikh facility where Mubarak was being held, confirmed Mubarak's condition Sunday evening.

Mubarak faces trial in August on charges of ordering police to kill anti-government protesters during the uprising that forced him from office in February. He faces a possible death sentence if convicted.

He was hospitalized after suffering heart palpitations in April and has been struggling with complications from stomach cancer, his family lawyer said in June.

Mubarak stepped down February 11 after an 18-day uprising during which pro-democracy protesters demanded a c hange in government and reforms. Egypt is now ruled by a military council and a caretaker Cabinet, which has promised reform and new elections. •

Heat Wave In Central U.S. Shows No Signs Of Ending

Heat Wave Us

By MURRAY EVANS 07/17/11 06:34 PM ET AP

OKLAHOMA CITY -- As temperatures climbed into the 90s Sunday in Steele, N.D., a small window air conditioner in Paul and Betty Smokov's ranch home just couldn't keep up.

"It's 82 in the house," Betty Smokov said. "The heat is really oppressive and sticky."

That observation could be made anywhere in the central U.S. Heat advisories and warnings were in place in 17 states, from Texas to Michigan, as temperatures and humidity combined to make being outside uncomfortable for millions. One National Weather Service forecaster called the heat wave "unrelenting" and said sweaty residents shouldn't expect any relief soon: A so-called "heat dome" over the region isn't moving much.

"The trend is not our friend right now," said Daryl Williams, a forecaster in Norman.

In Oklahoma City, forecasters expected another day of 100-degree heat Sunday, which would be the 27th day this year the city has reached 100 or above. The city is on pace to break its record for such days – 50 set in 1980 – with triple-digit heat possible through September.

It's even worse in western Oklahoma, where temperatures at 110 or above have been common in recent weeks. In Enid, asphalt at a major intersection along U.S. Highway 412 buckled Saturday night from the intense heat.

Justin Tinder of Weatherford and his family visited the Oklahoma City Zoo on Sunday, arriving at 9 a.m.

"By noon, we were headed out," Tinder said. "It was too hot for us to stand much longer. We decided to check it in and go find some air conditioning."

In Chicago, city officials said a half-dozen cooling centers would remain open this week, as temperatures as high as 105 were forecast in Illinois.

Cooling centers also were open in Detroit to help residents who don't have air conditioning at home. Others were heading toward water for relief, including 65-year-old welder Marcellus Washington, who wore a floppy cloth fishing hat and sunglasses as he walked through a park on the Detroit River that marks the border with Canada.

"A day like this, you can't beat it," Washington said. "It's a heavenly day. It's God's weather."

Others who had to be outside in the heat took precautions. North Dakota National Guard Capt. Dan Murphy said several hundred soldiers deployed for flood-fighting efforts in the Dakotas were required to take mandatory rest breaks in the shade.

"It's hot in those vests and uniforms," Murphy said. "These are soldiers. They can't just strip down to T-shirts and shorts."

Officials at the Cornhusker State Games, an amateur sports festival in Nebraska, had crews bring extra water and ice for participants.

"It takes a physical toll on anyone out there," said the event's executive director, Dave Minarik.

Dwight Anderson, the owner of an Omaha, Neb., amusement park, had two tons of ice cubes dumped in the park's swimming pools Friday night to lower the water temperature from 88 degrees to 82. Anderson said he plans to dump more ice into the Fun Plex pools on Monday night or Tuesday morning.

The Schwan's USA Cup youth soccer tournament in Blaine, Minn., suspended play for a time Sunday because of heat indexes that soared to 110 degrees. Tournament spokesman Barclay Kruse said organizers wanted to avoid any heat-related health issues before they developed.

Police said heat may have played a role in the death of a 55-year-old man at a homeless camp in Springfield, Mo., on Saturday. Police found him in a small tent after others at the camp raised alarm. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

The heat also is adversely affecting wildlife. The Texas AgriLife Extension Service said last week that pregnant does are having difficulty carrying fawns to term and other fawns are being born prematurely.

Texas A&M University researchers determined the period from February to June was the driest such period on record in Texas, with a statewide average of 4.26 inches of rain. The next driest February-to-June stretch was in 1917, with a 6.45-inch rain average.

The Smokovs in North Dakota monitored their cattle for heat symptoms Sunday as temperatures neared triple digits.

"The cattle seem to be OK and we haven't lost any from the heat," Betty Smokov said. "We're making sure they got water and in this heat, that's all you can do."

Obama is a COP KILLER!!!

#######################################################

My husband has been saying for a long time that the guns down on the border of Mexico are from America. He says they talk about that on the Mexican news. Nobody wanted to believe it. It makes me so sad to look how far we've fallen. -The people were screaming for crucifixion when majority ruled and put our Lord Jesus Christ on the old rugged cross. The people wanted to reach as high as Heaven when majority ruled and they started building the tower of Babel. The people were screaming for change when the majority ruled and voted in Barack Hussein Obama as President. As in the first two things, God intervened and made those things to work out as He saw was needed in those situations, and rest assured He'll do it again this time.
So thinks I, friends. We need to trust The Lord Jesus Christ. -Blessings!, Missygirl*

TODAY'S NEWS:

Leaders, media 'hiding what they know' about Obama eligibility

Investigator says, 'I can't wait to see Nancy Pelosi in an orange jumpsuit'

President Barack Obama in the Oval Office April 4, 2011

The private investigator who has confirmed that Barack Obama is using a Social Security number issued to a Connecticut address, when he allegedly was in high school in Hawaii at the time it was assigned, says the leaders in American government as well as the mainstream media are aiding and abetting in concealing the truth from the American public.

"They are hiding what they know to be the truth, that he's not eligible to be president," she said today. "I can't wait to see Nancy Pelosi in an orange jumpsuit."

Her comments came in an interview with WND CEO Joseph Farah, who was sitting in for the vacationing G. Gordon Liddy today on his show that is live-streamed at WND and Radio America.

WND has reported on the issue of Obama's Social Security number. In fact, a lawsuit is pending now in Washington over a Freedom of Information Act dispute regarding the original, which remains sealed in the state of Hawaii.

The first three digits of a Social Security number indicate the state of the applicant's mailing address. Obama's number begins with 042, which falls within Connecticut's range of 040 through 049.

The national news media have been virtually silent on this potentially criminal fact.

Indeed, when Fox News finally attempted to explain it, the news network broadcast false information and then scrubbed the report from its website.

When WND asked the White House about the issue, then–Press Secretary Robert Gibbs dodged the question.

The Freedom of Information case by Orly Taitz' is against Social Security Commissioner Michael Astrue, and explains that because of the numerous questions surrounding Obama's eligibility, his birth certificate and his other records, the information should be released.

In her interview today, Daniels said she was drawn into the controvery over Obama's background, antecedents and eligibility because she was concerned by Obama's massive spending programs when he took over.

She reported a client asked her to do some research on Obama, so she started doing some work using databases to which she has access as a licensed private investigator.

"Up pops this Connecticut Social Security number for him," she said.

She said the policy is that such numbers are allocated based on addresses. Also, she has been able to identify the time frame that that number was issued to the last two weeks of March in 1977.

That was when Obama reportedly was in the 10th grade in Hawaii, his mother was in Indonesia and his father in Africa.

"They cannot explain it away," Daniels said. "There has to be a card he filled out with the Social Security Administration for him to have that number."

She said she knows the time frame because those individuals holding numbers ending in 24 and 29 already have died, and so have become public, and those were issued during that time period. Obama's ends in 25, so would have to have come between them.

"He's using a phone Social Security number to hide something from his past, which probably was tied to the original Social Security number he had," she reported.

But she noted using an incorrect number is a felony.

She said she's contacted a number of leaders in Congress and the Department of Justice, without success.

She is confident that he is using this particular number because, "I can give you addresses for 25years at various law firms, his home, when he was in Massachusetts at Harvard, as a senator in Washington, showing that Social Security number at those addresses."

In the lawsuit over the number, a subpoena has been served on officials in the Hawaii Department of Health and the state's attorney general demanding access to the original "1961 typewritten birth certificate #10641 for Barack Obama."

The attorney behind the case, Taitz, told WND she is asking a court to compel compliance.

The California attorney contends the state's "privacy" regulations should be ignored, as Obama already has released what the White House purported to be a copy of the document to the public.

She has developed a case in Washington, D.C., seeking the original application for Obama's Social Security number, a document that could provide significant information about the president's early life that relates to his eligibility.

U.S. District Court Chief Judge Royce Lamberth recently rejected a defense concern over procedure in the dispute. Taitz said that moved the case into the discovery phase, in which she can issue subpoenas to those holding documentation she is seeking.

In a statement on her website, she explained, "The case at hand revolves around a … FOIA request for the original SS-5 application for CT SSN 042-68-xxxx, that Mr. Barack Obama is fraudulently using. According to his Selective Service certificate Mr. Obama is using this Social Security number … however Social Security administration states, that this number was never issued … Typically, individuals, who do not have valid birth certificates resort to using invalid Social Security numbers, therefore the birth certificate is at issue."

She noted that Obama released an image the White House said was a copy of his Hawaiian certificate, but many experts have assessed it as a fake.

"Plaintiff filed multiple requests for access to the original birth certificate, which is supposed to be on file with the Department of Health in Hawaii. Plaintiff received a response from the registrar of the Department of Health in Hawaii, Mr. Alvin Onaka, stating that he and Ms. Loretta Fuddy, director of health, will not provide access to the original, due to considerations of privacy. Plaintiff filed an appeal, stating, that there cannot be a consideration of privacy, as Mr. Obama already released the document in question, and it is available to the public at large on the web site WhiteHouse.gov. There is no genuine issue of privacy, as all the information in the document in question is public, but there is an issue of forgery, as multiple expert testimonies show the document to be forged," Taitz wrote.

An affidavit filed by Colorado private investigator John N. Sampson specifies that as a result of his formal training as an immigration officer and his 27-year career in professional law enforcement, "it is my knowledge and belief that Social Security numbers can only be applied for in the state in which the applicant habitually resides and has their official residence."

Daniels previously told WND she believes Obama had a different Social Security Number when he worked as a teenager in Hawaii prior to 1977.

"I doubt this is President Obama's originally issued Social Security number," she told WND. "Obama has a work history in Hawaii before he left the islands to attend college at Occidental College in California, so he must have originally been issued a Social Security number in Hawaii."

The published record available about Obama indicates his first job as a teenager in Hawaii was at a Baskin-Robbins in the Makiki neighborhood on Oahu. USA Today reported the ice-cream shop still was in operation one year after Obama's inauguration.

In April, some 11 months after WND began publicizing Obama's Connecticut-based SSN, Bill O'Reilly of the Fox News Channel briefly addressed the issue while reading his viewer mail on the air.

But the news anchor falsely asserted the president's father lived in Connecticut.

In his viewer email segment April 13, O'Reilly was asked: "What about Obama having a Connecticut Social Security Number? He never lived there."

"His father lived in Connecticut for several years," O'Reilly claimed, adding that "babies sometimes get numbers based on addresses provided by their parents."

However, there is no evidence Barack Obama Sr. ever lived in Connecticut. He left Hawaii in 1962 to study at Harvard in Massachusetts and then returned to his home country of Kenya.

When WND publicized O'Reilly's error, the information vanished from the Fox News Channel's website and BillOReilly.com.

O'Reilly's full explanation of the "truth" of Obama "myths" is here:

The BirtherReport.com website responding to complaints by Fox podcast customers that O'Reilly's Social Security claim, broadcast on Fox, had gone missing from the audio archive, trumpeted the headline: "Busted: Fox News scrubbed Bill O'Reilly's 4/13 mailbag segment on Obama's Social Security Number reserved for Connecticut applicants." The site added, "Not only did Fox News scrub the podcast, they also left out the viewer email about Obama's Social Security number at O'Reilly's website. I report, you decide!"

Huge sink hole opens causing fatal Utah crash

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A 15-year-old girl died after heavy rains caused a huge sink hole to open on a Utah highway, swallowing one vehicle and causing her father's SUV to careen off the road.

Authorities said the crash that killed Justine Barneck and injured her father, Michael Barneck, late Wednesday night happened when the road collapsed in front of them, leaving a patch of asphalt on the edge of the hole that the vehicle hit, causing the fatal accident.

At about the same time, a second car actually went into the 40-foot-wide, 30-foot-deep hole, said Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Todd Johnson. The driver of that vehicle, 37-year-old Helen Paulson, was hurt, but the extent of her injuries was not immediately clear.

The accidents near Tabiona, about 90 miles east of Salt Lake City, came about 15 minutes after a heavy storm began at about 11:30 p.m., quickly overflowing a clogged culvert and washing out the two-lane state road, Johnson said.

Michael Barneck was taken to a hospital with head injuries and is expected to be released Friday.

Justine Barneck was very close to her family, especially her twin sister, Jentri, who was not in the vehicle, said older sister Jamie Allred.

"She was an absolute angel," Allred said.

Allred said her sister's death was deeply felt in Tabiona, a town of a few hundred people at the base of the Uinta Mountains. She said the family has strong roots in the community, where one school holds kindergarten through high school students.

"She was more than willing to help anyone. I don't think there could be many 15-year-olds like her ... she was perfect from day one," Allred told The Associated Press.

All three people were wearing seat belts, Johnson said.

The highway will remain closed while repairs are made and traffic is being diverted. •

Mexico soldiers find 'largest' pot plantation ever

Two Soldiers watch 134 tons of marijuana burning in 2010 in the border town of Tijuana, Mexico.

A Mexican military commander said Thursday that his soldiers discovered a record-busting marijuana plantation 120 hectares (nearly 300 acres) large in the state of Baja California.

"It is the largest marijuana plantation in Mexican history," General Alfonso Duarte, the commander of the military region based in the far north-western border city of Tijuana, told AFP.

Duarte said the plantation can produce 120 tons of marijuana, which he valued at nearly $160 million.

The plantation, which includes housing for some 60 workers, is hidden in an area best known for raising tomatoes, he said.

The Baja California plantation is nearly twice as large as the previous record marijuana plantation, a 64 hectare pot farm in the northwestern state of Sinaloa discovered in 2007, the military said in a statement.

Soldiers found the plantation while on ground patrol, and arrested six of the nearly 20 people who were working at the time, Duarte said.

Duarte added that he did not know which drug cartel owned the plantation.

The plantation is located near the center of the Baja California peninsula, the general said, but refused to be more specific about the location.

Separately, the Catholic bishop of Saltillo, in the northern border state of Coahuila, said that drug cartels are recruiting children and paying them to act as watch guards.

The kids, usually boys around the age of 12, are paid $120 a week, Bishop Raul Vera told the daily La Jornada. •
