The Open Grave (a true story)

The truth of the resurrection has been forcibly illustrated
by the following incident:

In the city of Hanover, Germany, is a grave known as "the open grave." It is that of a woman, an infidel German princess, who died over one hundred years ago, and who, on her death-bed, gave orders that her grave should be covered with a great marble slab, weighing perhaps a ton, surmounting solid blocks of stone firmly bound together with clasps of iron, with this inscription placed on the lowermost stone of the tomb: "This grave, purchased for eternity, must never be opened."

But no human device can thwart the plans of God, or hinder the workings of life from Him. It happened, providentially no doubt, that a birch-tree seed was buried with the princess. Soon it began to sprout. Its tiny shoot, soft and pliable at first, found its way up through the ponderous stones of the massive masonry.

Slowly and imperceptibly, but with irresistible power, it grew, until at last, it burst the bands of iron asunder, and opened this never-to-be-opened grave, leaving not a single stone in its original position.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
(Sorry princess, no one can stop the Lord!)

******************************************
It's almost October 31st......
Personally I choose to not celebrate Halloween.
I believe it is one wicked Helliday that the world would do better without.

For those who are going to let their kids go door to door,
You need to know what's lurking behind those doors.

I have a link to the National Sex Offender Registry. This website will show if there are pedophiles and perverts living near you or even on your own block.

Knowledge is power folks. This isn't Mr. Rogers neighborhood anymore, these days we have to be aware. For our kids sakes of course, but also for our own sakes. Be Safe.*

I wanted to remind everyone, don't forget to change the filter on your heater. (it really should be changed once a year)
My husband went down into the cellar and changed ours and I was really surprised at how full of dirt and dust it was.
It's so simple to turn on the heater but when that nice warm heat is coming through, for your own family and pets it's good that the the air coming out is as clean as we can get it. The house even smells fresher.
It's especially good to do if anyone in the home has asthma.
Our filter was purchased at Ace Hardware this year and it was only a few bucks.
Not expensive at all.
When you remove the old one it has the size written on it. They come in different sizes.
Also, don't forget to check or change the batteries in your carbon monoxide detector too. *

A Bible Thought for today:

Matthew 24:36 - “But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.”

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:
Anybody who sets a date for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ may be crossing the line of blasphemy. The Bible teaches very clearly and very plainly and our Lord taught that no one knows the time—no one. Just before our Lord was taken up into glory, the disciples asked Him, “Lord, wilt Thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? And He said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in His own power” (Acts 1:6-7). No one knows the day when Jesus Christ is coming again, but what a glorious day that will be!

Major 7.5-Magnitude Quake Hits Off Indonesia

Updated: 1 hour 37 minutes ago

JAKARTA, Indonesia (Oct. 25) -- A strong earthquake hit late Monday off the western coast of Indonesia's Sumatra island, but no damage or casualties were immediately reported.

The 7.5-magnitude temblor struck at a depth of 20 miles (30 kilometers) on a small island off Sumatra, the U.S. Geological Survey said. A massive earthquake and tsunami struck off the same island in 2004.

A tsunami watch advised that waves were possible within a few hundred miles (kilometers) of the epicenter. However, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said historical data suggest any wave it created would not be destructive.

In Jakarta, Indonesia's Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said the tremor that struck at 9:42 p.m. (1642 GMT) was centered about 78 kilometers (48 miles) southwest of the Pagai Selatan in Mentawai Island, with a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles).

It was reportedly felt in five town in Bengkulu and West Sumatra provinces, but so far there no reports of damages or casualties, said Tatok Yatimantoro of the agency.

The world's largest archipelago, Indonesia is prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity due to its location on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire.

(CNN) -- One man was electrocuted and his female partner was severely burned after the couple attempted to steal copper wire from a vacant property in Southern California, police said.

"I believe they thought the power was off," said Lt. Keith Hupp of the South Gate Police Department.

"It was a pretty ugly scene," he added.

A witness said he rushed to the site after hearing an explosion.

"I just heard a loud explosion and a lady screaming, just screaming like crazy, so I walked over there and I seen her like half burned, and she was just like crying, asking for help for her husband," Jose Carrasco told CNN affiliate KABC.

Police said they believe they found the couple's children -- ages 3 and 6 -- waiting in a truck near the vacant property when they arrived at the scene Saturday afternoon.

The woman was being treated for severe burn injuries and listed in critical condition Saturday night, Hupp said, and the children were in the custody of protective services.

Police have not released the names of the victims pending notification of next of kin.

(CNN) -- The death toll from a shooting at a house party in the violence-plagued Mexican border city of Juarez has climbed to 14, state media reported Sunday.

Chihuahua State Attorney General Carlos Manuel Salas told reporters that another 14 people were injured when gunmen attacked the gathering of young people at a house party Friday, the state-run Notimex news agency reported.

The victims killed were between ages 14 and 30, Notimex said. Children as young as 7 and 11 were among the injured, the agency reported.

Salas said authorities were investigating the backgrounds of all the victims.

Mexico's National Human Rights Commission said it was sending representatives to the neighborhood, which was near another home where cartel gunmen stormed a house party in January, killing 15 people. Most of the victims in that shooting were youths who had no ties to organized crime.

Investigators said the January shooting was a case of mistaken identity caused by bad intelligence. It sparked widespread outrage in the violent border city, including calls for Mexican President Felipe Calderon to resign.

In a news conference Saturday, the country's deputy interior minister told reporters federal authorities will maintain the security strategy they are developing with state officials.

"We are here to address this deplorable and condemnable acts, and to ensure full support to local authorities investigating these unfortunate events," deputy interior minister Juan Marcos Gutierrez said, according to Notimex.

(CNN) -- A designer clothing store, a comic book store, a tattoo parlor and a ... women for sale store.

This unusual window display shocked shoppers at a busy Tel Aviv mall last week when among the run-of-the-mill shops, they came across a group of young women standing in a storefront.

On them were price tags detailing their age, weight, height, dimensions and country of origin.

Organizers said the campaign is designed to bring awareness to women trafficking. It aims to collect enough signatures to pressure the Israeli justice ministry to back legislation that makes it a crime for men to go to prostitutes.

This legislation is the next important step in the fight against women trafficking, said attorney Ori Keidar, one of the founders of the task force against the problem.

"The legislation against the prostitutes' customers will bring a reduction in the demand for prostitution and it will be a less lucrative business for crime organizations," Keidar said.

"This in turn will bring a reduction in the trafficking of women."

Keidar said the legislation is modeled after similar legislation in Sweden that has drastically reduced trafficking and prostitution.

Over the past decade, about 10,000 women have been trafficked into Israel in what Keidar calls "modern slavery."

The women are locked, beaten, raped, starved and forced to receive 15-30 men a day 365 days a year, according to the attorney.

About three years ago, Israeli police greatly reduced women trafficking by pouring resources into the problem. Security forces have also helped by stepping up patrols on the Israeli-Egyptian border as a result of al Qaeda presence in the Sinai.

This 300-kilometer border was the main route for smuggling women into Israel, Keidar said.

"This legislation against the customers will bring a further reduction in trafficking and with a little more pressure we can make this go away" Keidar said.

Hello! I was looking for things to share today, and this is what I've come up with:

Expert Advice -

Why Am I Shedding Hundreds of Hairs a Day?

By Dr. Richard Mizuguchi Oct 20th 2010 4:45PM

Did you know that during the normal course of a day you will lose between 50 and 100 hairs? This is nothing to be concerned about -- it's just nature's way of replacing old hair with new hair. Other mammals have growing and shedding seasons, but human beings consistently grow and shed hair on a daily basis throughout life. But what happens when you lose more hair than is typical? What if you're shedding 200 or 300 hairs daily? What if you even see your hair coming out in clumps?

You may be suffering from what is called telogen effluvium. Those who suffer from this condition sometimes stop washing, combing or brushing their hair, because that's when they notice the most hair loss. But the hair that is destined to shed as a result of telogen effluvium will shed whether or not you wash or brush your hair.

To understand telogen effluvium, you must understand some basic hair biology. The average scalp has 100,000 hairs. About 90 percent of these hairs are in what is called the growing, or anagen, phase. The other 10 percent are in the resting phase, which we call the telogen phase. Typically, once a hair stops growing, it remains dormant and will fall out approximately two to four months later. Why does it fall out? Because the resting hair is pushed out of the hair follicle in the scalp by the new hair, which is in the growing phase.

Telogen effluvium occurs when this balance gets out of whack. For example, one may have 70 percent of their hair in the growing phase and 30 percent in the dormant phase. When the balance between the growing-phase hairs and the dormant-phase hairs falls out of sync, a patient may see a mass of hair falling from their head and grow alarmed.

Why does this condition occur? There are many common causes. Women often suffer telogen effluvium after childbirth. This is the body's normal reaction to what happens during pregnancy, when the equilibrium between the anagen and telogen hair actually is in reverse from telogen effluvium -- i.e., more hair tends to remain in the anagen phase. Most women who are pregnant say that their hair has the most volume ever. After childbirth, more hair tends to fall out. This is the body's normal reaction to recalibrating the equilibrium of growing-phase and dormant-phase hair. When a woman's hair starts to fall out after childbirth, there is usually nothing to be alarmed about.

Other causes include illnesses that cause high fever; major injuries and surgeries; diets, such as crash diets or some of the more popular fad diets that cause a significant amount of weight loss within a short period of time; hormonal changes, which may result from stopping or starting birth control; thyroid disease; certain medications (especially beta blockers, anticoagulants, retinoids including excess vitamin A and carbamazepines); new medications; and immunizations, like an annual flu shot. Other common causes include chronic illnesses like cancer, lupus, renal failure and liver disease. Telogen effluvium may also be the result of severe psychological stress.

The good news: Recovery generally occurs spontaneously within six months to a year. Still, it's important to find the underlying cause and correct it earlier rather than later. Once the cause has been identified, your doctor can determine options for treatment. These options vary depending on the cause of the condition. If the condition is caused by pregnancy, a patient will typically have a full recovery. •

Hello Everyone! -This is what I have for you today:

Police: 5th-Grader Takes Pot to School, Turns in Parents

(Oct. 18) -- An elementary school student in North Carolina took lessons he learned from a drug awareness program to heart last week by turning in his own parents for breaking the law, police say.

The fifth-grader, who attends an elementary school in Matthews, N.C., recently took part in a DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program at his school. The program, which was started in California in 1983, is intended to give children valuable skills for resisting the allure of drugs, gangs and violence.

The Matthews community has its own DARE officer who spreads the organization's message to three of the area's elementary schools, WBTV reported.

Upon attending the DARE presentation, the 11-year-old student, who is not being identified, brought an undisclosed amount of marijuana cigarettes to school. The boy allegedly told a school safety officer that the drugs belonged to his parents.

On Thursday, officers with the Matthews Police Department arrested the child's 40-year-old father and 38-year-old mother and charged them both with misdemeanor counts of marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The child's parents were cited but not jailed, pending their next court appearance. Social services, however, has removed the 11-year-old and a sibling from the family home and placed them with relatives, police say.

The Matthews Police Department did not return calls for comment from AOL News today. On Sunday, Matthews police Officer Stason Tyrrell spoke briefly with WBTV.

"Even if it's happening in their own home with their own parents, they understand that's a dangerous situation because of what we're teaching them," Tyrrell said.

WBTV also spoke with the child's father, who told them he does not give drugs to his children. When asked how his child got the drugs, the father reportedly said it was "no one's business."

Federal Agents Urged to 'Friend' People on Social Networks, Memo Reveals

Published October 14, 2010

A privacy watchdog has uncovered a government memo that encourages federal agents to befriend people on a variety of social networks, to take advantage of their readiness to share -- and to spy on them. In response to a Freedom of Information request, the government released a handful of documents, including a May 2008 memo detailing how social-networking sites are exploited by the Office of Fraud Detection and National Security (FDNS).

As of Thursday morning, Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, and Digg had not commented on the report, which details the official government program to spy via social networking. Other websites the government is spying on include Twitter, MySpace, Craigslist and Wikipedia, according to the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), which filed the FOIA request.

"Narcissistic tendencies in many people fuel a need to have a large group of 'friends' link to their pages, and many of these people accept cyber-friends that they don't even know," stated one of the documents obtained by the EFF. "This provides an excellent vantage point for FDNS to observe the daily life of beneficiaries and petitioners who are suspected of fraudulent activities," it said.

According to the EFF, this memo -- which specifically details how the government evaluates potential citizen requests -- suggests there's nothing to prevent an exaggerated, harmless or even out-of-date offhand comment in a status update from quickly becoming the subject of a full investigation.

With this revelation, the government joins a growing list of groups using social-networking sites for purposes other than social networking. As these sites have gained popularity, scammers and spammers have become rampant, and hackers are increasingly turning to networks such as Facebook to spread viruses and Trojan Horses.

The EFF also uncovered efforts by the Department of Homeland Security to monitor social media during the inauguration of President Obama. According to the documents, the DHS collected a massive amount of data on individuals and organizations explicitly tied to the event.

The DHS notably attempted to ensure that its use of social networks was appropriate while gathering data online. The newly released documents cite the Fair Information Practices Principles, a 2008 policy memo by the Department of Homeland Security's chief privacy officer that set guidelines for ensuring online privacy during the collection of information.

Another government agency, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, denies using social networks to spy on people.

"USCIS does not permit agency personnel to attempt to 'friend' immigration petitioners and their beneficiaries on social networks in an effort to reveal fraud."

Still, the EFF worries that the DHS may be taking things too far. "While it is laudable to see DHS discussing the Fair Information Practice Principles as part of the design for such a project, the breadth of sites targeted is concerning," the watchdog group wrote on its website.

Among the networks specifically cited for analysis "were general social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, and Flickr, as well as sites that focus specifically on certain demographic groups such as MiGente and BlackPlanet, news sites such as NPR, and political commentary sites DailyKos," the EFF wrote.

For more information, read the full report at the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

State lawmakers preparing citizenship legislation

PHOENIX -The state senator in Arizona who wrote the nation's toughest law against illegal immigrants said Tuesday he's collecting support across the country from legislators to challenge automatic U.S. citizenship to the children of illegal immigrants.
Arizona state Sen. Russell Pearce's target is the 14th Amendment, but it is unclear how the state lawmaker can or will influence a federal statue.
"This is a battle of epic proportions," Pearce said Tuesday during a news conference at the Arizona Capitol. "We've allowed the hijacking of the 14th Amendment."
Pearce declined to say how the legislation will differ from similar measures that have been introduced in each two-year congressional session since 2005. None of them made it out of committee.
He and another Arizona lawmaker did argue that wording in the amendment that guarantees citizenship to people born in the U.S. who are "subject to the jurisdiction" of this country does not apply to the children of illegal immigrants because such families don't owe sole allegiance to the U.S.
The efforts by Pearce and the other lawmakers come amid calls to change the U.S. Constitution's 14th Amendment. Supporters cite costs to taxpayers for services provided to illegal immigrants and their children.
Changing the Constitution is difficult.
It requires approval by two-thirds majorities in both chambers of Congress, an impossibility now because Democrats have the majority in both houses and most oppose such a measure. Even if Republicans gain power in November and legislation is passed, an amendment would still need to be ratified by three-fourths of the states.
Paul Bender, a constitutional law professor at Arizona State University, said if the lawmakers focus their argument on the "subject to jurisdiction" wording, they won't get very far because the founders only meant it to apply to the children of foreign diplomats born in the U.S.
"If the British ambassador and his wife have a child in the U.S., that child is not a citizen because he is not subject to the jurisdiction of the U.S. We cannot put him in jail, we cannot even give him a parking ticket," Bender said.
The 14th Amendment "could have easily have said you're a citizen if you owe your allegiance, but our Constitution doesn't say that," he said. "It says if you're born here, and you're not a diplomat's child, then you become a citizen, and that's the way its been for 100 years."
Carlos Galindo-Elvira, vice president of Valle del Sol, a Phoenix group that provides social services to community members and advocates for immigrants, said Pearce's interpretation of the amendment is an effort to "legitimize bullying babies."
He also questioned why lawmakers would focus on this issue rather than the country's economic woes and high unemployment rate. "All it does is split the country," he said.
Pennsylvania state Rep. Daryl Metcalfe, the founder of a national group of legislators critical of illegal immigration, said the 14th Amendment "greatly incentives foreign invaders to violate our border and our laws." He had a news conference Tuesday in Harrisburg, Pa., on the multistate endeavor.
The effort could run afoul of the language in the 14th Amendment and lead to a court battle over the constitutionality of the law. But Metcalfe said providing birthright citizenship to children of illegal immigrants is an "ongoing distortion and twisting" of the amendment.
Metcalfe's office said lawmakers in at least 12 other states besides Arizona and Pennsylvania said they were making their own announcements about working on the citizenship legislation. Those other states: Alabama, Delaware, Idaho, Indiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, Texas and Utah.
Pearce was the main sponsor of a tough new Arizona law that would require police enforcing other laws to question people about their immigration status if there's reason to suspect they're in the U.S. illegally. It was to go into effect this summer, but a judge put on hold key provisions pending the resolution of a legal challenge.
Pearce also was the chief sponsor of a 2007 state law targeting employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants.

O'Donnell questions separation of church, state

WILMINGTON, Del. -Republican Christine O'Donnell challenged her Democratic rival Tuesday to show where the Constitution requires separation of church and state, drawing swift criticism from her opponent, laughter from her law school audience and a quick defense from prominent conservatives.
"Where in the Constitution is separation of church and state?" O'Donnell asked while Democrat Chris Coons, an attorney, sat a few feet away.
Coons responded that O'Donnell's question "reveals her fundamental misunderstanding of what our Constitution is. ... The First Amendment establishes a separation."
She interrupted to say, "The First Amendment does? ... So you're telling me that the separation of church and state, the phrase 'separation of church and state,' is in the First Amendment?"
Her campaign issued a statement later saying O'Donnell "was not questioning the concept of separation of church and state as subsequently established by the courts. She simply made the point that the phrase appears nowhere in the Constitution."
Conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh made the same point in his radio program soon after the debate, saying, "There's nothing in the Constitution about separation of church and state."
The controversy was the latest to befall O'Donnell in a race where she trails badly in the polls against Coons.
Coons is a county executive nominated by the Democrats for the seat held for years by Vice President Joe Biden. O'Donnell, with strong tea party support, burst into the national spotlight by winning the Republican primary over a longtime GOP congressman.
The subject of religion and the law came up during their debate at Widener University Law School as O'Donnell criticized Coons for saying that teaching creationism in public school would violate the Constitution.
Coons said private and parochial schools are free to teach creationism — O'Donnell used the term "intelligent design" — but that under the "indispensable principle" of separation of church and state "religious doctrine doesn't belong in our public schools."
He said the separation of church and state was one of a number of "settled pieces of constitutional law" worked out through years of legal development including Supreme Court decisions. He said a woman's right to abortion was another.
He noted again the First Amendment's ban on establishment of religion.
"That's in the First Amendment?" she said, smiling.
Both candidates suggested that the exchange showed the other didn't understand the Constitution.
The First Amendment states: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
The phrase "separation of church and state" is usually traced to President Thomas Jefferson. In a letter in 1802, he referred to the First Amendment and said that it built "a wall of separation between Church & State."
The relationship of government and religion continues to be debated in American law. Many argue that the First Amendment's reference to religion involves the establishment of any particular religion, an important concern to the American colonists, not a ban on all involvement between religion and government.
O'Donnell's comments, in a debate aired on radio station WDEL, created a stir in the audience.
"You actually audibly heard the crowd gasp," Widener University political scientist Wesley Leckrone said after the debate.
Erin Daly, a Widener professor who specializes in constitutional law, said, "She seemed genuinely surprised that the principle of separation of church and state derives from the First Amendment, and I think to many of us in the law school that was a surprise."
During the debate, O'Donnell argued that Coons' views on teaching of theories other evolution showed that he believes in big-government mandates.
"Talk about imposing your beliefs on the local schools," she said. "You've just proved how little you know not just about constitutional law but about the theory of evolution."
Coons said evolution was science, creationism a religious doctrine.
The asteroid Itokawa.

The asteroid Itokawa, as seen by the Hayabusa spacecraft in 2005.

In the movies, a bomb is usually the most effective way of stopping an asteroid from wiping out life on Earth. But real scientists have had their doubts about bombing the potentially hazardous objects. (See asteroid and comet pictures.)

Now, however, some researchers are finding evidence that an explosion might not, as feared, make a bad situation worse by sending a huge cloud of harmful debris raining down on the planet.

And other scientists are suggesting that, despite previous assumptions, we wouldn't need an impossibly powerful bomb to destroy a threatening asteroid.

Considering the damage a large asteroid strike could do to humanity, bombing any so-called near-Earth objects, or NEOs, headed our way might be a viable last resort "if we have the international political will," said Robert Weaver of Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. •

Hello! -The day after all 33 miners were rescued, is today!
What a blessing! The rescue was made without a hitch!
All glory and praise to You Jehovah!

"I've been near God, but I've also been near the devil," Mario Sepúlveda, the second miner to be rescued, said, as he celebrated on reaching the surface. "God won."

"There are actually 34 of us," 19-year-old Jimmy Sanchez wrote, "because God has never left us down here."

Amen, a watching world would agree!

This 'miracle in the mine' happened because of Your mercy and grace, Lord God, and there are so many of us who are utterly overwhelmed with thankfulness to You!
-then there are those who start with stupid, ignorant stuff
....

"But now the question has become, exactly whose God was down there with Jimmy Sanchez and the others? The Seventh Day Adventist god, the Catholic god, or whose god was it?"

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!!!!!!!!!

THE GREAT I AM! THE ONLY TRUE GOD!!!! There is no other!!!

I'm sorry for their disrespect to You Lord. Please forgive their ignorance.
Thank You that the men were rescued and please allow them to heal quickly and their families also. In Jesus' Name I pray. amen.

Police Emergency (this is a joke for you!)

This is the true story of George Phillips of Meridian, Mississippi, who was going to bed when his wife told him that he'd left the light on in the shed. George opened the door to go turn off the light but saw there were people in the shed in the process of stealing things.

He immediately phoned the police, who asked "Is someone in your house?" and George said no and explained the situation. Then they explained that all patrols were busy, and that he should simply lock his door and an officer would be there when available.

George said, "Okay," hung up, counted to 30, and phoned the police again.

"Hello, I just called you a few seconds ago because there were people in my shed. Well, you don't have to worry about them now because I've just shot them all."

Then he hung up. Within five minutes three squad cars, an Armed Response unit, and an ambulance showed up. Of course, the police caught the burglars red-handed.

One of the policemen said to George: "I thought you said that you'd shot them!"

George said, "I thought you said there was nobody available!"

(Good to know:)
The public is starting to wake up to the true nature of the liberal media. A new poll by the Gallup Organization finds that 57 percent of Americans say they have little or no trust in the mass media to report the news fully, accurately, and fairly. This is a far cry from 1970s, when more than 70 percent of the population thought the media was very trustworthy.

I'm glad to finally see the liberal media being regarded as a force that guides public opinion. It should be a no-brainer that the devil would use the press to control the world.

After everything that happened with the miner's being rescued and all, What I can't put to the side is this : The Whole World was Watching. -I can't remember a time when it was possible that the whole world was watching something at exactly the same time. -Not even 9-11 Trade Center Tragedy. We are NOW to the point that the whole world would be able to see God's Two Witnesses from Revelation 11. Jesus could come back at any moment! Technology is ready for anything. This prophecy could be easily fulfilled now. Just something to think about.

Hello Everyone! -I hope there are people out there interested in my blog. I'm gonna have to say, because of low views of my blog, I 'm going to go back to my old format of blogging. {i.e., not always blogging daily, more short quotes and stories, recipes and family pictures.} Now that I think of it, maybe I can just do both. How does that sound? -I'll only be sharing the news that I think is important, not necessarily 'headline' news.
SUPER!
-I'm glad you love the idea! I do to. Well, let's get started...

Exposure to Light at Night May Lead to Weight Gain

Light Switch DimmerLet there be light ... Just not at night.

Exposure to light at night, when the body is programmed to shutdown or go into sleep mood, may lead to weight gain -- even if the person exposed to the light is not eating extra calories.

Ohio State University
researchers recently discovered that mice exposed to light at night, particularly dim light, gained more weight than their counterparts who lived in a normal light/dark cycle even thought the mice exposed to light at night didn't eat more food.

"What was actually happening was that mice with light at night were shifting when they were eating," says Laura Fonken, lead study author and a doctoral student in Ohio State's neuroscience department. "They were eating during their rest phase."

So what does this mean for humans who stay up late watching TV or surfing the Internet?

"It's hard to predict," says Fonken, "but evidence suggests this may be true in humans, too."

She suspects there may be a link between humans' increased exposure to light at night and the increase in rates of obesity nationwide.

Fonken says further study is necessary, however. The Ohio University research, which was published in the early online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences this week, showed that mice exposed to light at night but with access to food only during normal eating times did not gain weight. It was only the mice that changed their eating times that gained weight, taking on a body mass gain of about 50 percent more than their standard light-dark cycle counterparts. "When you restrict consumption to the rest phase, you see weight gain," Fonken says.

This would seem to suggest that eating late at night -- even if you're not consuming more calories than you normally would -- may still be a risk factor for obesity. Fonken thinks her experiments with mice may model what we know as night-eating syndrome, a disorder where people have minimal appetite in the morning and suffer from insomnia as well as a tendency to overeat at night.

Fonken says she can't say right now if this study means anything for humans but since other studies have shown a link between night eating and weight gain, it's important to be aware of the dangers, particularly if you work late at night or watch TV late into the evening. "Keep a regular schedule of eating," Fonken suggests, to avoid consuming food well after the dinner hour.

Muslim Brotherhood 'declares war' on U.S.

Analyst compares leader's sermon to bin Laden's pre-9/11 warning

Posted: October 12, 2010

Five years before the 9/11 attacks, al-Qaida declared war on America, the West, Christians and Jews – and virtually no one noticed.

Now, a longtime observer of Islam is warning that a "war declaration" of potentially much greater significance has been made.

The Supreme Guide of the Muslim Brotherhood, Muhammad Badi, who was elected only months ago, has "endorsed anti-American Jihad and pretty much every element in the al-Qaida ideology book," writes Barry Rubin, author and director of the Global Research in International Affairs Center and editor of the Middle East Review of International Affairs Journal.

The Brotherhood – the dominant Islamic organization in the West that has spawned most of the major Muslim terrorist groups, including al-Qaida, along with the largest "mainstream" organizations – is giving the signal that it is "ready to move from the era of propaganda and base-building to one of revolutionary action," says Rubin.

In a sermon published Sept. 30 titled "How Islam Confronts the Oppression and Tyranny [against the Muslims]," Badi said waging jihad against both Israel and the United States is a commandment of Allah that cannot be disregarded.

The remarks were delivered in a weekly sermon, published Sept. 30 and translated into English.

Governments trying to stop Muslims from fighting the U.S., he said, "are disregarding Allah's commandment to wage jihad for His sake with [their] money and [their] lives, so that Allah's word will reign supreme" over all non-Muslims.

Rubin concludes: "Let it be said that in September 2010, the Muslim Brotherhood, a group with 100 times more activists than al-Qaida, issued its declaration of war."

He calls the sermon "one of those obscure Middle East events of the utmost significance that is ignored by the Western mass media, especially because they happen in Arabic, not English; by Western governments, because they don't fit their policies; and by experts, because they don't mesh with their preconceptions."

The sermon is a signal to the Brotherhood's hundreds of thousands of followers, Rubin says.

"Some of them will engage in terrorist violence as individuals or forming splinter groups; others will redouble their efforts to seize control of their countries and turn them into safe areas for terrorists and instruments for war on the West."

Rubin calls Badi's "explicit formulation of a revolutionary program" a "game-changer."

"It should be read by every Western decision-maker and have a direct effect on policy because this development may affect people's lives in every Western country," he writes.

GOINGS ON AT MY HOUSE:

Well, today all of the remaining vegetables were picked and taken inside. The Garden is empty now. Weather forecast this morning says ' frost' overnight tonight. So, today we cut the tomatoes into good sized cooking chunks and froze them, also we have sun-dried tomatoes cooking in the oven right now! We wanted to make sure we had plenty of veggies ready for this winter when everything gets super expensive at the grocery store. (If you can even find good ones at all.)

We will for sure know that ours are 100% organic! -

On Sunday we cleaned the living room very good, vacuumed out the couch and chair, brought in firewood and stacked it up, cleaned the aquarium, put on the storm windows, we just want to be ready for whenever the first snow may fall.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I hope everyone is ready and registered to vote in the November election.

This is very important. I also believe it's our Christian duty to vote.*

George Washington said, "Truth will prevail where there is pains taken to bring it to light."

Henry Ford said, "I've never objected to paying taxes, but I do object to government eating up the real wealth of this country on the pretext of giving it back to the people. It never gets back to the people!"

And you can do your part as an American citizen; what is your responsibility?

TO VOTE !

A Funny, Bunny Story -(actually a funny, bunny joke!)

Once upon a time there was a man who was peacefully driving down a winding road. Suddenly, a bunny skipped across the road and the man couldn't stop. He hit the bunny head on. The man quickly jumped out of his car to check on the poor creature. There, lying lifeless in the middle of the road, was the little bunny.

The man cried out, "Oh no! What have I done?! I killed the poor little thing!!!"

The man started sobbing uncontrollably. At that moment he heard another car approaching. It was a woman in a shiny blue car. The woman stopped and asked what the problem was. The man explained, "Oh, look what I’ve done! It’s terrible, just terrible! I ran over a poor little bunny! and now he's DEAD!!"

The woman exclaimed, “I can help you!” She ran back to her car and popped open the trunk. She reached in and grabbed a spray bottle, ran back to the lifeless rabbit and began to spray him down.
The bunny immediately sprang up, ran into the woods, stopped, and waved back at the man and woman. Then it ran another 10 feet, stopped, and waved. It did this over and over again until the man and the woman could no longer see the bunny.

Once out of sight, the man exclaimed, pointing at the can of spray. "What is that?"

The woman replied, “ Here...read it for yourself!”
This is what he read:

..." Harespray. Gives life to dead hare. Adds wave." "...I'm just sayin'..."

Senior citizens brace for Social Security freeze

Stella Wehrly, Hank Wehrly AP – Stella Wehrly, left, speaks during an interview as her husband Hank Wehrly looks on, at the St. Andrews …

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Seniors prepared to cut back on everything from food to charitable donations to whiskey as word spread Monday that they will have to wait until at least 2012 to see their Social Security checks increase.

The government is expected to announce this week that more than 58 million Social Security recipients will go through a second straight year without an increase in monthly benefits. This year was the first without an increase since automatic adjustments for inflation started in 1975.

"I think it's disgusting," said Paul McNeil, 69, a retired state worker from Warwick, R.I., who said his food and utility costs have gone up, but his income has not. He lamented decisions by lawmakers that he said do not favor seniors.

"They've got this idea that they've got to save money and basically they want to take it out of the people that will give them the least resistance," he said.

Cost-of-living adjustments are automatically set by a measure adopted by Congress in the 1970s that orders raises based on the Consumer Price Index, which measures inflation. Social Security benefits will remain unchanged as long as consumer prices remain below the level they were at in 2008, the last time a COLA was awarded.

Still, seniors like McNeil said they'll be thinking about the issue when they go to vote, and experts said the news comes at a bad time for Democrats already facing potentially big losses in November. Seniors are the most loyal of voters, and their support is especially important during midterm elections, when turnout is generally lower.

"If you're the ruling party, this is not the sort of thing you want to have happening two weeks before an election," said Andrew Biggs, a former deputy commissioner at the Social Security Administration and now a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute.

At St. Andrews Estates North, a Boca Raton retirement community, seniors largely took the news in stride, saying they don't blame Washington for the lack of an increase. Most are also collecting pensions or other income, but even so, they prepared to tighten their belts.

Bette Baldwin won't be able to travel or help her children as much. Dorcas Eppright will give less to charity. Jack Dawson will buy cheap whiskey instead of his beloved Canadian Club.

"For people who have worked their whole life and tried to scrimp and save and try to provide for themselves," said Baldwin, a 63-year-old retired teacher, "it's difficult to see that support system might not sustain you."

Baldwin and her husband mapped out their retirements, carefully calculating their income based on their pensions and Social Security checks. Trouble is, they expected an annual cost-of-living increase.

"When we cut back, we're cutting back on niceties," Baldwin said. "But there are other people that don't have anything to cut back on. They're cutting back on food and shelter."

Many at St. Andrews said the cost-of-living decision won't affect who they vote for next month. But seniors tied the Social Security issue to what they see as a larger societal problem with debt, entitlements and hopefulness for the future.

"I'm kind of glad in a way," Stella Wehrly, an 86-year-old retired secretary, said of the freeze. "One thing depends on the other and when people aren't working there's not enough people feeding into the Social Security system."

Wehrly and her husband, Hank, said curtailing government spending is necessary to maintain the Social Security system.

"We have a generation now that we're not going to leave a very good legacy for," she said.

Jack Dawson, 77, said the freeze is the right move considering the state of the government and the American economy.

"Who would be surprised what's happened?" he asked. "I feel this is the right decision in light of the malaise."

More than 58.7 million people rely on Social Security checks that average $1,072 monthly. It was the primary source of income for 64 percent of retirees who got benefits in 2008; one-third relied on Social Security for at least 90 percent of their income.

At the Phoenix Knits yarn shop in Phoenix, 73-year-old owner Pat McCartney said she already worries about paying for utilities, groceries and gas. Not having the increase makes her worry even more.

"If I have any major expense, I don't know what I'll do," McCartney said while helping customers with their knitting. "I live on Social Security."

In Kansas City, Mo., Georgia Hollman, 80, said Social Security is her sole source of income. She would have liked a bigger check, but said she's grateful for what she gets.

"There isn't nothing I can do about it but live with it," she said. "Whatever they give us is what we have to take. I'm thankful we get that little bit."

Advocates for seniors argue the Consumer Price Index doesn't adequately weigh the costs that most affect older adults, particularly medical care and housing.

"The existing COLA formula does not account for the economic reality of the true costs that most seniors faced," said Fernando Torres-Gil, director of UCLA's Center for Policy Research on Aging and the first person appointed to the governmental post of assistant secretary for aging, during the Clinton administration.

Still, Torres-Gil said the political reality is different, and many feel seniors are lucky to have their checks determined by the CPI, instead of some new formula that might make it even harder to secure a raise.

"We may be just lucky to keep the current index," he said.

Dramatic endgame nears for trapped Chile miners

SAN JOSE MINE, Chile – They'll come up one by one in green overalls bearing their names on their chests — first the fittest, then the weakest, twisting in a steel cage that proved itself with four flawless test runs deep into the earth.

The dramatic endgame hastened Monday for the 33 Chilean miners who have braved two months underground, with rescuers reinforcing the escape shaft and the 13-foot-tall rescue chamber sliding, as planned, nearly all the way to the trapped men.

"It didn't even raise any dust," Mining Minister Laurence Golborne said.

If all goes well, everything will be in place late Tuesday to begin pulling the men out, officials said. The lead psychologist for the rescue team recommended the extractions begin at dawn Wednesday. No official decision was announced, but Andre Sougarret, the rescue team coordinator, tweeted Monday evening that "today the miners sleep their last night together!"

On Monday, the Phoenix I capsule — the biggest of three built by Chilean navy engineers, named for the mythic bird that rose from ashes — made its first test run after the top 180 feet of the shaft was encased in tubing, the rescue leader said.

Then the empty capsule was winched 2,000 feet, just 40 feet short of the shaft system that has been the miners' refuge since an Aug. 5 collapse.

"We didn't send it (all the way) down because we could risk that someone will jump in," a grinning Golborne told reporters.

Engineers had planned to extend the piping nearly twice as far, but they decided to stop after the sleeve — the hole is angled 11 degrees off vertical at its top before plumbing down, like a waterfall — became jammed during a probe.

Rescue team psychologist Alberto Iturra said he recommended the first man be pulled out at dawn because the miners are to be taken by Chilean air force helicopters to the nearby city of Copiapo and fog tends to enshroud the mine at night.

It is a roughly 10-minute flight, said Lt. Col. Aldo Carbone, the choppers' squadron commander. He said the pilots have night-vision goggles but will not fly unless it is clear. Ambulances will be ready for backup. The drive would take about an hour.

Officials have drawn up a secret list of which miners should come out first, but the order could change after paramedics and a mining expert first descend in the capsule to evaluate the men and oversee the journey upward.

First out will be the four fittest of frame and mind, said health minister Jaime Manalich. Should glitches occur, these men will be best prepared to ride them out and tell their comrades what to expect.

Next will be 10 who are weakest or ill. One miner suffers from hypertension. Another is a diabetic, and others have dental and respiratory infections or skin lesions from the mine's oppressive humidity.

The last out is expected to be Luiz Urzua, who was shift chief when the men became entombed, several family members of miners told the AP, speaking on condition of anonymity because they did not want to upset government officials.

The men will take a twisting, 20-minute ride for 2,041 feet up to the surface. It should take about an hour for the rescue capsule to make a round trip, deputy rescue coordinator Rene Aguilar told The Associated Press.

Golborne said all would be ready by 12:01 a.m. Wednesday. Officials wanted to make sure the concrete around the steel tubing at the top of the shaft set, he said.

Plans called for the media to be blocked by a screen from viewing the miners when they reach the surface. A media platform has been set up more than 300 feet away from mouth of the hole.

After being extracted, the miners will be ushered through inflatable tunnels, like the ones used in sports stadiums, to ambulances that will take them to a triage station. Once cleared by doctors there, they are to be taken to another area where they'll be reunited with one to three family members chosen by each miner.

After the reunion, the miner will be driven to a heliport for the flight to Copiapo.

Iturra, who has tightly managed the miners' underground lives to keep them fit and busy, turned his attention Monday to their families. Just as the miners will need time to adjust once they have surfaced, so will their families, he said.

Iturra recommended they leave the tent city where they have kept vigil, which is increasingly besieged by journalists. It sprang up amid piles of rock at the copper and gold mine isolated in the coastal desert of Atacama.

"They need to get their feet firmly back on the ground as well," he said. "That's why I sent them home to sleep."

A torrent of emotions awaits the miners when they finally rejoin the outside world.

As trying as it has been for them to survive underground for 68 days, the mine is at least terra cognita. Out of the shaft, they will face challenges so bewildering that no amount of coaching can fully prepare them.

They will be celebrated at first, embraced by their families and pursued by reporters, magnets for a world intensely curious to hear their survival story. They have been invited to visit presidential palaces, take all-expenses-paid vacations and appear on countless TV shows.

Contracts for book and movie deals are pending, along with job offers. More money than they could dream of is already awaiting their signature.

But eventually, a new reality will set in — and for most, it won't be anything like the life they knew before the mine collapsed above their heads.

"Before being heroes, they are victims," University of Santiago psychologist Sergio Gonzalez told the AP. "These people who are coming out of the bottom of the mine are different people ... and their families are, too."

For the loved ones awaiting the miners, news that the rescue tunnel was nearly ready brought a mixture of joy and anxiety.

Maria Segovia, whose 48-year-old brother, Dario, is among those trapped, said that when he is finally out, "I'll tell him I love him, that I'm very proud of you." Then, she said, smiling, "I'll kick his backside" so he never goes into a mine again.

Chile's government has promised each miner at least six months of psychological support, in part to deal with the sudden fame.

At first they'll feel besieged, poorly treated by the media and perhaps overwhelmed by the attention even of their own families, predicted Dr. Claus Behn, a University of Chile physiologist.

Society will "demand to know every minute detail, and they're going to offer enormous quantities of money and popularity," the doctor said.

The miners' psychological support team was designed mostly to help them endure the extreme conditions. They have also received training to deal with the media, told they need not answer every intrusive question.

The miners have seemed happy in videos they filmed and sent to the surface, but some have avoided the exposure. And while Manalich insists they are unified, reflecting the disciplined teamwork that helped them survive, all that could change once they are out.

Already, relations within and between their families have become strained as some seem to be getting more money and attention than others.

A philanthropic Chilean mining executive, Leonardo Farkas, gave $10,000 checks in the miners' names to each of the 33 families, and set up a fund to collect donations. Co-workers who weren't trapped, but were left out of a job — including some who narrowly escaped getting crushed in the collapse — wonder whether they will be taken care of, too.

One miner's child was invited onto a Chilean TV game show where she earned thousands of dollars, and 27 of the 33 workers have filed a $10 million negligence lawsuit against the mine's owners. A similar suit against government regulators is planned.

The money rush will be intense — and temporary. The government required each miner to designate someone to receive their $1,600 monthly salary, and opened bank accounts that only the miners themselves can access.

But Behn said the miners need good financial advice as well so the money doesn't melt away.

"If they're getting now a violent inflow of money, it should be administered so that it can serve them for the rest of their lives," Behn said.

What often happens after situations of extreme isolation is that the survivor tells everything all at once, and when there's nothing left to say, misunderstandings begin.

Manalich said the miners seem incredibly unified.

Brandon Fisher, president of the company that made the drill hammers that opened the escape shaft, cautioned that the miners' unity may not last.

His drill heads also helped save nine men in Pennsylvania in the Quecreek Mine disaster in 2002. They, too, came out of the hole blinking in the glare of TV cameras, and in some cases their friendships and family relationships didn't hold up.

"They're in for the surprise of their lives. From here on out, their lives will have changed," Fisher predicted. "There aren't too many of those guys who get along because of all the attention, the lawsuits, the movie deals. Once money gets involved, it gets ugly."

Explosives found at NY cemetery in '09 cause scare

NEW YORK – A caretaker doing gardening work at a historic cemetery dug up a plastic garbage bag containing military-grade explosives last year and left it at the site, where it remained until a volunteer told authorities about it Monday, setting off a big police response.

The employee found the C-4 in May or June 2009 after digging down about a foot into the ground at New York City Marble Cemetery on Manhattan's Lower East Side, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said. It contained eight bricks of the explosive, which Kelly said couldn't have gone off because there were nothing to detonate it. The spot was near a tombstone but not in a grave.

It was unclear how long the bag had been at the cemetery, but "we believe it's been there for a significant period of time," Kelly said. He said it appeared to be military-grade explosive similar to the material used in the 2005 London transit bombings but that there were no suspicions of terrorism in connection to the discovery.

The caretaker left the bag on the property, by a fence in the back. "It's not clear at this time whether he understood precisely what was in the bag," Kelly said.

More than a year later, a volunteer cleaning the cemetery, a landmark built in 1831, came across it over the weekend and initially left it there before calling police on Monday because it wasn't clear what the material was. Authorities closed nearby streets as they investigated.

The bricks weighed just over a pound, Kelly said. C-4 is a plastic explosive that is more powerful than TNT. It's commonly used by the military because it is easy to shape and relatively hard to set off by accident. C-4's main ingredient is RDX, which also is used in fireworks.

It is relatively insensitive to impact, friction or fire, although large quantities can explode if burned. Even shooting it with a rifle won't trigger the reaction. Only a detonator or blasting cap will do the job properly. Less than a pound of C-4 could potentially kill several people, and several blocks of C-4, weighing about 1.25 pounds each, could potentially demolish a truck.

Kelly said the material from the cemetery was being taken to the police range where explosives are tested. Authorities also were digging around in the cemetery to see if any more material was found.

"We'll have a better idea when the bomb squad looks at it, but it has yellow writing on a green material," he said, adding that's how C-4 is wrapped today. "It's difficult to say with any precision how old this is."

A call to the cemetery seeking comment was not immediately returned. The New York City Marble Cemetery was designated a landmark in the late 1960s. Six members of a branch of the Roosevelt family are buried there, as well as Stephen Allen, former mayor and New York governor.

Police were also looking into two messages that were found in the area to see if there was any connection. One, written in chalk on the sidewalk near the cemetery, said, "I really hope one of you finds this." The other, a note placed on a police car at the precinct near the site, made a reference to Jesus Christ being kept out of the neighborhood and was signed by someone identified as "Jesus Christ."

Kelly said there's no indication to think the three discoveries are linked, but investigators were checking into it.

Neighborhood residents took the scare in stride, watching from police tape and snapping photos, while chatting on cell phones and drinking coffee.

"I wasn't worried, because everyone was out on the street and you have to think if it was something serious it would've been blocked off more," said Danielle Baskin, 22 who lives across the street.
