AOL News Surge Desk (Sept. 14) -- The Eiffel Tower and its surrounding grounds were evacuated Tuesday after a bomb threat was made.

An anonymous phone call was made to the owners of the tower just after 8:20 p.m. local time, Le Figaro reported.

Some 2,000 people were at the Eiffel Tower and Champs de Mars park at 9 p.m. local time when police directed them to move to the banks of the Seine River as they conducted a thorough search of each floor of the tower with bomb-sniffing dogs, AFP reported.

According to the Telegraph, the resulting traffic congestion threw central Paris into "chaos."

French officials have put increased security measures in place in recent months because of threats allegedly from al-Qaida, the BBC reported. While there is no word of a connection between today's threat and the notorious international Islamic terror network, the bomb threat comes on the same day that the French Senate voted overwhelmingly to ban the Muslim burqa.
