Stun gun used on woman who blocked North Carolina drive-thru

HOPE MILLS, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina deputies say they used a stun gun on a woman who blocked a McDonalds drive-thru for 20 minutes after employees refused to serve her because she broke in line.

Authorities say 37-year-old Evangeline Lucca bypassed the order screen and the line at the restaurant in Hope Mills, about 60 miles south of Raleigh, and pulled directly up to the pick-up window Friday afternoon.

Cumberland County deputies say employees refused to take her order and told her to go to the back of the line. She refused to move, and police were called.

Authorities say Lucca was shocked after she blocked the line for 20 minutes. Her 3-year-old daughter was taken into protective custody.

Lucca was charged with second-degree trespass. A phone listing for her couldn't be found. •

Actor “beyond shocked” after seeing leg amputated in altered ad

By Eric Pfeiffer | The Sideshow

The digitally altered diabetes ad featuring Cleo Berry, An overweight man in Los Angeles says he was "beyond shocked" to discover an altered photo of him on New York City billboards with his leg removed.

27-year-old Cleo Berry tells the New York Times that while living in NYC several years ago, he participated in a $500 photo shoot with photographer Morten Smidt. Unbeknownst to Berry, those photos were then sold to ImageSource, a stock photo company.

The stock photo was then sold to New York City's Department of Health, who digitally altered the photo to remove Berry's right leg and is using the photo as part of an anti-diabetes campaign.

"I cried at my computer screen for, like, a minute." Berry said of first seeing the altered photo. "I said: 'Oh my gosh, they even gave me crutches. Come on, people.' "

The health department said it's common practice to alter photos without the model's participation. And Berry agrees he signed a waiver before the shoot, allowing for such alterations and distribution.

"This issue isn't about one actor but rather the 700,000 New Yorkers who struggle with diabetes, which kills 1,700 people a year and causes amputations in another 3,000," said John Kelly, a spokesman for the health department, in a statement. "Advertising to warn the public about health concerns saves lives, and we will continue our efforts to warn New Yorkers about diabetes."

Berry said his main objection over the advertisement is how it could affect his acting career. "I've always wanted my photo in an ad all over the city, but I was hoping it would be for a TV show or something, not — this," Berry said.

And he's even willing to seek professional revenge, offering to lower his usual acting rate to any soda companies who might want to use his unaltered image in one of their campaigns.

"I'll sing and dance for them and I won't charge an arm and a leg," he said. •

Who Called the Food Stamp Grocery Police?

By Sylvia Cochran

COMMENTARY | Do more than 44 million Americans need a food stamp grocery police to inspect their purchases? How about the 16.3 percent of Floridians, as identified by the Wall Street Journal, who are receiving food stamp assistance?

The Sun Sentinel highlights two Republican lawmakers who are introducing this type of legislation in Florida. Claiming taxpayers should not foot the bill for the poor to buy obesity-causing soda, candy or ice cream with food stamps, they are working on adding this contraband to the items already ineligible for food stamps purchases -- cigarettes, toilet paper, pet food and booze.

In short, if you are poor, HB 1401 will make sure your children will not have any "sweetened beverages, including sodas; sweets, such as Jell-o, candy, ice cream, pudding, popsicles, muffins, sweet rolls, cakes, cupcakes, pies, cobblers, pastries, and doughnuts; and salty snack foods, such as corn-based salty snacks, pretzels, party mix, popcorn, and potato chips." Is the emphasis really on healthy eating?

Because if this is the case, then what constitutes "healthy?" The Montana Office of Public Education believes snack foods are healthy, as long as they do not feature more than 30 percent of calories from fat -- no more than 10 percent from saturated fat -- and portion size is limited to 1.25 ounces. If Florida has its way, the food stamp provided snacks you pack in your child's Justin Bieber lunch bag are limited to celery stalks and peeled carrots.

I understand the emphasis on healthy eating; I even get the notion that taxpayers should not be on the hook for the unhealthy food choices of others, but where do you draw the line? Today it is war on snack foods. When will the poor face the fact that they cannot buy pesticide-spritzed veggies, hormone-fed beef and potentially salmonella-laden eggs? How long will it take before the grocery police will also inspect the shopping baskets of those buying foods with their own hard-earned money?

If America is truly the land of the free, should this freedom not also pertain to the types of foods we choose to eat? As long as pretzels and Jell-o are legal to buy and sell, should I not have the right to purchase them? And should I not have this right -- whether I am rich, just making ends meet, or downright poor? •

Victims weep, ridicule Norway killer's court speech

OSLO (Reuters) - Survivors and relatives of those killed in a Norwegian mass-murder rampage wept and ridiculed the smiling attacker in court Monday as he defended his acts by issuing a tirade against immigration.

Anders Behring Breivik, who killed 77 people, provoked tears and laughter in the packed court as he gave a far-right salute and said he had carried out the massacre to prevent his country's cultural destruction.

"The way he talked, the way he smiled ... everything made me realize that no one has the same picture of the world as he does," said Helene Georgsen, 17, who survived Breivik's shooting spree.

She said the court appearance helped her realize that he "can't hurt me any more."

Breivik, clad in a black suit with silvery tie, told the court: "The attacks on the government headquarters were preventive attacks on traitors to the nation, people committing or planning to commit cultural destruction, including destruction of Norwegian culture and Norwegian ethnicity."

He has admitted detonating a fertilizer bomb that killed eight people at a government building in Oslo in July and hours later gunning down participants at an island summer camp for Labor Party youths, killing 69.

As the small Scandinavian country steels itself for a wrenching trial set to begin on April 16, Breivik used Monday's routine custody hearing to demand his release on the grounds that "people subjected to genocide" may legally defend themselves.

"We in the Norwegian movement will not sit and see that we are made a minority in our own country," he said.

District Judge Wenche Gjelsten extended his detention until the start of the trial.

"What a clown," said courtroom spectator Freddy Lie, 52, who had one daughter killed and another injured at the summer camp.

"The only thing he lacked was a red nose. To sit and look at us like he did, you can see that he is sick."

Breivik made his statements after the judge let him explain why he had pleaded not guilty despite acknowledging responsibility for the worst outbreak of violence in Norway since World War Two.

As he entered the courtroom the blond-haired killer raised his handcuffed arms after putting his fist on his heart in what his lawyer said was a salute to right-wing extremists. He had agreed in advance to be photographed.

Breivik looked repeatedly toward the audience of about 60 survivors and family members and 64 journalists. When he spoke from a sheaf of notes, his voice was calm.

Some in the courtroom wept at first, among them 18-year-old Anette Davidsen, a survivor of the island shootings.

"It was difficult to see him and to see him smile," she said. "I could see that he does not regret what he has done, and I have lost so many friends."

As Breivik delivered his message, she joined several others in laughing derisively.

"He was ridiculous," she told Reuters. "The way he spoke, the way he smiled. It was good to laugh at him."

In a manifesto posted online before the attacks, Breivik wrote that he was targeting "traitors" whose leftist views and softness on immigration had brought the country low.

Monday he said: "The ethnic Norwegians will be a minority in Oslo in the next 10 years. It is a fact. I represent Norwegian resistance."

Two court-appointed psychiatrists have declared Breivik psychotic, which ordinarily would mean he cannot be sentenced to prison. After a public outcry the judges in the case have asked for another evaluation by different experts.

Breivik called the initial report declaring him psychotic to be "ridiculous," but he was cut off by the judge.

Breivik will stand trial, regardless of the psychiatrists' assessment.

If his judges agree at the end that he is psychotic he is likely to be to placed in a locked psychiatric institution. If deemed fit to serve in prison, he would face up to 21 years upon conviction. •

Jewish leaders offended by Georgia preacher's Ceremony

ATLANTA (AP) — Jewish leaders are criticizing a ceremony that involved a controversial megachurch leader being wrapped in a religious scroll and exalted as a "king" to the applause of his parishioners.

The video from a service last Sunday at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church shows Rabbi Ralph Messer, a Messianic preacher, instructing two men to slowly wrap Bishop Eddie Long in a large scroll that's purported to be the Torah.

"It doesn't matter where you go, how you try to attack him. He's sealed," Messer proclaims, before the scroll is opened to reveal a teary-eyed Long. Moments later, Long was seated in a plush chair, covered in a prayer shawl while holding the sacred scroll and lifted by four men.

"He now is raised up from a commoner to a kingship," Messer proclaims, as the men walk Long's seat around an adoring crowd.

Messianic Jews believe that Jesus Christ, or Yeshua, is the Messiah, putting them at odds with traditional Jewish theology. Most Jews consider the faith to be a form of evangelical Christianity.

The Torah is one of Judaism's most sacred objects and Jewish groups said the notion that it was used in a ceremony at the church was offensive.

"The notion that he wraps Bishop Long in a Torah is horrifying simply because it's completely inappropriate. It's an awful way to use the Torah," said Bill Nigut of the Anti-Defamation League. "And it doesn't in any way approximate any Jewish ritual."

Long was accused of sexual misconduct in September 2010 by four male former church members who accused him of abusing his spiritual authority. He settled out of court in May for an undisclosed amount.

He took a leave of absence last year to deal with his divorce and other personal issues, but returned to the pulpit in January.

The video, which was recorded Sunday, shows Long sitting on a chair under a spotlight as Messer repeatedly chants, "It's a new birth." The camera pans to congregation members, who cheer.

Long's church, which is in Lithonia east of Atlanta, issued a statement from Messer saying that the ceremony was based on a passage from the Old Testament on restoring the Kingdom of David.

"My message was about restoring a man and to encourage his walk in the Lord," Messer said in the statement. "The presentation of the Scroll of Torah was simply a way of bringing honor to a man who had given his life to the Lord and had given so much to his church, the Atlanta metro area and throughout the world.

"It was not to make Bishop Eddie L. Long a king."• (But yet that's what it looks like.)

Iran Warns World Of Coming ‘Great Event’

Iran is waiting for the Mahdi

Amid crippling sanctions over its nuclear weapons program, Iran is continuing to prepare itself for war against the West, and now is warning of a coming great event. “In light of the realization of the divine promise by almighty God, the Zionists and the Great Satan (America) will soon be defeated,” Ayatollah Khamenei, the Iranian supreme leader, is warning.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei

Khamenei, speaking to hundreds of youths from more than 70 countries attending a world conference on the Arab Spring just days ago, told a cheering crowd in Tehran that “Allah’s promises will be delivered and Islam will be victorious.”

The countries represented included Bahrain, Egypt, Libya, Palestine and Tunisia, all of which have been involved in the Arab Spring.

In his remarks, Khamenei advised the youths to remain vigilant, stating that the Islamic awakening in the region has delivered several blows to the enemies of Islam and that all Muslims, despite their own historical and social differences, remain united in opposing the “evil hegemony of the Zionists and the Americans.”

Khamenei then claimed the current century as the century of Islam and promised that human history is on the verge of a great event and that soon the world will realize the power of Allah.

Khamenei has been heard to say that the coming of the last Islamic Messiah, the Shiites’ 12th Imam Mahdi, is near and that specific actions need to be taken to protect the Islamic regime for upcoming events.

Mahdi, according to Shiite belief, will reappear at the time of Armageddon. Selected forces within the Revolutionary Guards and Basij reportedly have been trained under a task force called “Soldiers of Imam Mahdi” and they will bear the responsibility of security and protecting the regime against uprisings. Many in the Guards and Basij have been told that the 12th Imam is on earth, facilitated the victory of Hezbollah over Israel in the 2006 war and soon will announce publicly his presence after the needed environment is created.

Sources within Vali’eh Amr, the revolutionary forces in charge of the supreme leader’s protection, also recently revealed an assassination attempt on Khamenei that was thwarted just in time.

SepahOnline reports that last year during Khamenei’s visit to the port of Asalouyeh in southern Iran, Revolutionary Guards found pistols and hand grenades hidden by one individual dressed as a janitor in a barracks that Khamenei was set to attend. The supreme leader was then returned to Tehran immediately.

Other sources within the Guards report that following Barack Obama’s letter to the Iranian leader last month requesting negotiations, Khamenei ordered Iranian officials to speak positively about holding nuclear talks and giving hope to Obama and other Western leaders that a negotiated solution is possible.

This was apparent after a trip of U.N. nuclear inspectors to Iran this week, who called the talks positive.

At the same time, his directive to the Guards ordered a speedy completion of the Iranian nuclear bomb program in which Guards’ missiles can be armed with nuclear warheads. Khamenei believes once that’s achieved, Iran can test a nuclear bomb, letting the world know that Iran has joined the nuclear-armed club and that any confrontation will result in destruction of much of the Western world.

The Revolutionary Guards not only can hit all U.S. bases in the Middle East with their ballistic missiles but also reach most capital cities in Western Europe. The Guards, with the help of China and North Korea, are working on intercontinental ballistic missiles. But more dangerous to America, as reported last July, is the Guards action in arming their vessels with long-range ballistic missiles and their expansion of their mission into the Atlantic Ocean, right into the Gulf of Mexico.

Any Iranian military or commercial vessel easily could get right outside the U.S. coastline and in less than 60 seconds fire a ballistic missile armed with a nuclear payload and detonate it over U.S. skies in an electromagnetic attack that would plunge America back into the 18th century.

Studies show within just one year after such an attack, two-thirds of Americans would cease to exist and the rest would live under dire conditions.

The radicals ruling Iran not only have prepared for mass suppression of their own people as they get close to their confrontation with the West, but also have prepared to fuel unrest through their proxies in the Middle East and elsewhere.

SepahOnline, with sources within the Guards, reports that Afghanistan will soon witness an increase in terrorist activities against U.S. forces. The Guards not only are training Taliban fighters in Iran close to the Afghan border, but are shipping armaments to forces in Afghanistan with an order to create instability by harming U.S. forces and destabilizing the Afghan government.

Guards agents have also been ordered to do the same in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and other Gulf counties.

The Guards also announced the imminent formation of a defensive unit to deal with possible radioactive contamination. Although they did not say why, they could be preparing for a nuclear exchange with the West once Iran becomes nuclear-armed.

WND previously has reported that the chieftains in Iran also are preparing to execute their own internal critics and opponents at the right time.

This was similar to action taken by the founder of the Islamic regime in 1988, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

In the book, “A Time to Betray,” it is documented when Khomeini announced the campaign, he said, “If the person at any stage or at any time maintains his (or her) support for the opposing groups, the sentence is execution. Annihilate the enemies of Islam immediately.” •
